#About the Design
On November 14, 1969, Apollo 12 was struck by lightning 36 seconds after liftoff. This caused a power surge, and instruments on the spacecraft began to malfunction. All telemetry was garbled. A decision to abort the mission was imminent. However NASA engineer, John Aaron, flight controller for the mission realized he had seen the on-screen error pattern before. He calmly suggested that the crew “try SCE to AUX”. This immediately fixed the problem. Apollo 12 was able to continue to the moon, and John Aaron’s calm response has become one for the ages.
This t-shirt captures Aaron’s response in the style of the “Keep Calm and Carry On” campaign used on posters in Great Britain during WWII. If you have a geeky friend, spouse, or parent who loves space exploration, this shirt will make the perfect gift.
